What To Expect During Your Consultation
The consultation is the first appointment with Dr Kalsi.

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a member of the team who will ask you to fill in a medical history form which you may have completed in advance.

It is important that you fill this form in accurately and with as much detail as possible. Many conditions and medications can impact upon your gum health and the treatment that we provide. You will also be asked to complete a consent form for clinical photographs. Photography is an important part of your clinical records and helps us to plan your treatment effectively.

DISCUSS YOUR TREATMENT PLAN WITH DR KALSI

Once the forms are complete, you will be escorted to the consultation room. Here, Dr Kalsi will have a detailed discussion with you at the start of the appointment to ensure you can voice your concerns and share your ideal outcomes of treatment. If applicable, the reasons for your referral can also be discussed in more detail. He may ask you about previous treatment that you may have had in the past. It is also usual to enquire about other relevant social, medical and dental factors. You will then be taken to the surgery, at which point clinical photographs may be taken by Dr Kalsi.

EXAMINATION AND GENERAL DENTAL CHECK

The clinical examination will include a general dental check as well as a detailed specialist periodontal chart. The periodontal chart involves measuring the position of the gums and determining whether or not spaces (pockets) have opened up between the gums and the teeth. The amount of bleeding, gum recession and tooth mobility will also be assessed. This is the most important part of the examination as it determines the severity and extent of the periodontal condition.

FURTHER EXAMINATION IF NEEDED

If the reason for your referral or your primary concern is recession then further measurements will be taken specific to this. In the same way, if you have a “gummy” smile or teeth that need lengthening then this will be looked at in more detail. We will ensure you are as comfortable as possible when the measurements are carried out. Further dental measurements or tests may also be completed depending on your condition and reason for referral.

If the reason for your referral is for dental implants, additional records may need to be taken as part of your clinical examination. Furthermore, a 3D X-ray (Cone Beam CT) will usually be required prior to any implant treatment to plan the position of any implant.

X-RAYS

Based on the findings, Dr Kalsi will usually be required to take specialised x-rays to assess your gum health in further detail. Gum Disease can lead to the loss of bone around your teeth. X-rays allow us to accurately assess the level of bone around your teeth, as well as the presence of any other dental pathologies, , which is not possible through general clinical examination. This information allows us to accurately diagnose the conditions which are affecting your teeth, as well as helping us to plan a bespoke treatment plan which is tailored to your needs.

During your assessment we may also ‘disclose’ your teeth which will make your teeth temporarily purple in order to assess how well you are removing plaque during your oral hygiene regime. This can easily be brushed away at home.

BOOK YOUR NEXT APPOINTMENT

Once we have completed the clinical examination, Dr Kalsi will then discuss the findings and suggest which treatment that may be required. He will answer any questions that you have and you will be given the opportunity to book the next appointment when you will be provided with an itemised breakdown of appointments and fees. We can also discuss whether you have any preference for sedation during any periodontal or implant treatment.

A deposit is required to secure your next appointment and we will let you know if any appointments require upfront payment. You will receive a digital report of your appointment. If you have been referred to us we will also send a digital report to your referrer.

The usual wait time for an appointment is 1-3 weeks and consultations usually taken up to 75 minutes. The consultation fee in Teddington and Sheen is £150. The fee includes all x-rays and copies of your clinical report.
