If your teeth start to appear longer than they used to, your gums may have started to recede.
Gum recession is the term used to describe the downward movement of the gums away from the neck of the tooth and thereby expose the root surfaces. Gum recession can be very distressing for some people not just because of the unsightly appearance but also they can be extremely sensitive to temperature as well as certain foods. Gum recession can also lead to tooth decay, and, in severe cases, tooth loss.
Dr Kalsi will assess the potential causes of your gum recession and advise yours accordingly on how to proceed. It is imperative that the cause of recession is addressed and controlled to prevent its progression and to allow any treatment to be successful.
The treatment approach to managing recession depends on the individual circumstances and what our intended aims are.
Treatment for gum recession may include a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing, medication, and surgical options to restore the gum tissue. It is important for individuals to practice good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, to help prevent gum recession.
Receding gums are a serious issue since it can lead to further health complications such as sensitivity, poor smile aesthetics, increased risk of gum or tooth infection as well as potentially tooth loss.
Can gum recession be reversed?
Yes, on most occasions. Several methods are available to treat this.
Dr Kalsi can perform a gum graft, which requires pulling the gum down over the receded area and/or taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth. The graft will improve not only the appearance of the gums but also the thickness.
